Can't you just see that recreated right there around where the yellow chairs sit? Will I actually do anything about it? Your guess is as good as mine at the moment. Maybe...one of these days...if I can get to it.

I clipped it out and waited to have a computer that wasn't really my daughter's so I could scan this place and talk to you about it. Maybe that is all some lame excuse but it is what it is (as I am so fond of saying and most people are so sick of hearing).

And how stupid am I? All the pictures are online. Oh well. I am using my scans anyway.

Let's just try and get past the clear picture that these people have more money than God. You don't live in a Georgian Mansion with six kids unless you are.

The real questions are:

Do you love it? Do you hate it? Or are you like me... a mixed bag?

Check it out and decide for yourself even though I have my opinions and I am not keeping them to myself.

I love everything about this playroom, especially the red velvet couch that any sensible person would wonder how on earth they keep clean. It doesn't matter. If I had six kids and a Georgian manse, I would definitely put a red velvet couch right up at the crafts table. Totes. I also love that even if they staged that little house made from a cardboard box, it is awesome. I will never forget the day our manny (yes, we had a manny) Julian made the coolest cardboard airplane I have ever seen for my son out of a giant box.

I love this dining room more than I have words to express, except for that chandelier. I think I could have done better than that. It is weird - like space alien weird. The table and chairs perfectly blend with the fireplace, ornate gold mirror and ceiling trim, and the colorful inlaid bohemian chest below. I want that chest. The floors are cool too. This seems very, very practical to me. Easy to clean, no frills and perfect for a family of 8. I can imagine 6 children fighting over who gets to sit in what color chair 'cause I would want a pink one. The eggplant walls really seal the deal, no? Best seen in the third picture. Flove. I get why they took so many of this one. I think they ought to maybe put a bunch of cool kid art in this room though...maybe, just a thought.

They completely lose me at this master bedroom. I love the walls but the bed is too much - maybe if it was not painted silver? I personally would have carried the mid century theme in here and the bed could work (even silver) with something else all together. And excuse me but where are the bedside tables? Sorry, not buying this. That bathtub is calling my name though.
This bathroom, very practical. Hoping there is lots of storage somewhere and that the little ones can reach that chain up there and that really tall sink but the two rolls of tp...people are clearly thinking. I like it. Wall paper is pretty cool too.

Zooey Deschanel's boyfriend is one of the screenwriters so she was here for a while. I didn't run into her either but I really don't get out much. She signed the wall of my favorite coffee shop, Moore Street Market.
She stayed at a local B&B and the owner asked her if she worked.
Her reply was, "I play piano" - both true and kind of sweet. It has to be pretty refreshing to hang out with people who have no idea who you are.

It is just a matter of a week now before this onslaught.
I guess this is ours because someone sent me a picture of it. We will share it with a 5 year old beauty queen so that should be good times in 100 degree heat. I may just throw the kids on there and wave from the shade.
Bring on the little fans with misters. I'll probably be there with my camera pointing right back at the crowds. It should be totally over the top this year. Our little town could have as many as 50,000 people here for the day.
Thank goodness we can walk wherever we need to go because one thing about the coast, there are only a couple of roads out of town and they are sure to backed up for miles and miles.

Happy Independence Day!
I know, horrible right? I miss my grandmother. My middle child (who reminds me the most of her and is therefore a comfort at these moments) was at a sleepover and did not want to come home because she feels she has an annoying little brother. Sigh. He is pretty annoying. I did not let on I was sad and needy. I played it cool.

So then I had another good cry, got a sympathetic hug from Jack who was then out the door for tennis. I spent a good part of the morning trying to cheer myself up. I looked at some of these funnies and I did laugh out loud a few times.

I would really like to say that about 20 times a day. It WOULD save a lot of time and besides, it is mostly true.

This makes me happy. I began to feel better. I don't know that woman but I love her.

Amen. No need to go to church after reading that one. Check.

Okay, maybe it was good middle child was having a nice peaceful morning somewhere else.

Then eldest daughter woke up and she'd bought me a nice funny card and an Amy Winehouse cd (Frank), and some gum which was thoughful because middle child always eats my gum. I go to get a piece after lunch and end up exclaiming, "Sadie" like Jerry says "Newman." The presents had a bow and everything!

We laughed over the fact that her boyfriend got his mother a card in Spanish (she does not speak Spanish) and he ate half the box of chocolates he bought her. I hope she is taking notes but it was funny. She then went to work but we ate cake together for breakfast first - just because.
I think I have done a fairly good job as a parent so far.

I am not a fan of forced holidays like this. I wanted nothing and I had no expectations.

It would be nice if they remembered though. My son, unsurprisingly, completely forgot, wanted me to take him shopping and acted like I was that witch with the flying monkeys when I said no but that SO wasn't going to happen. Next outing I do plan to see if this book exists in the 9 yr old version. ;)

I started to feel a little blue again but we tried a game of old fashioned Scrabble. It was okay. He has the attention span of a gnat sometimes (or maybe that is my patience span - so hard to call it) so I sent him outside.

First I thought I would start to read my favorite biography in the world, "The Last Lion," again for some entertainment and inspiration but I started to fall back asleep.

This is funny, come on....

I then downloaded "David Sedaris Live." On a day like this, instant gratification is such a really positive thing. I laughed a bunch and then still kept trying to fall asleep.

Oh wait...Yes, I am probably depressed but it is okay. It happens. Life is particularly laden with heavy responsibility right now and what the hell, I miss my grandmother like crazy today. I am laden with thoughts of tomorrow and all I have to do and what I could be doing now to mitigate it but instead am choosing not to because I worked about 70 hours last week and I am tired.

I know the drill. And I have a lot to be grateful for. Jack is making shrimp and some argula salad for dinner later. At some point I might get off my bum and take an hour power walk or not, depending. Middle child will come home and everyone will be together for dinner - for better or worse.

In no time at all I will back to my normal self. I always do get over these blues.

In the meantime...

And for real...

Because tomorrow it is back to this whether I feel it or not.

When I will be sure to be...

Everyone deserves a day to just be however they feel and today I am just so...

And am wanting so much for the world to have no expectations of me either. At the bottom of the chalk board it says, "Vimala cooks, everybody eats! No one turned away."
Curryblossom.com
What a radical notion to most and yet this restaurant started in her home kitchen many moons ago with weekly community dinners - her grass roots answer to feeding the hungry. The food is divine, local and organic. I encourage you to read more about Vimala here: http://www.treehugger.com/green-food/giving-food-away-is-great-for-business-the-surprising-benefits-of-local-lending.html

Or watch the short documentary here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1fbmSk3HIA&feature=youtube_gdata_player

What is that you say Lynne? Anything good that has ever happened started with a small group of committed women? Or some such. Vimala is a powerhouse of one.
She was my children's doctor's nanny when I first met her and she catered one of my best friend's weddings long, long ago and was having her community dinners even back then. She has a heart of gold and makes the best Indian food eva. I love that she has a restaurant now and that it is wildly celebrated. Power to the people.

She is an inspiration and always right there working away in the kitchen with a beautiful smile.

On this day it was take out as I said because when you are in Chapel Hill in March everything you do (or I do anyway) is geared towards making sure you are in front of the TV with your closest Tar Heel fanatics when the game starts- all the better when you show up with lunch from Vimala. We won! Go Heels! but I discovered I had a flat tire post game. After a little finagling thanks to Fran (my #1 Tar Heel buddy), Maggie and Juan, and a short walk in the woods with girlfriends and dogs, I was on my way back to homebase for dinner and a little relaxation and conversation by the fire with my friends, their family and my son.

Food, glorious food. We were really late as usual but more friends I have not seen in too long were waiting and, much to my surprise, an unexpected treat was in store.

I should back up though, I think. Tipi? Drumming? We knew you were sort of a hippy but really?

About 4 or 5 years ago a friend (and my son's preschool teacher) bought a large, real Indian tipi and put it up in the woods (with the help of a lot of other amazing women) on her 10 acre property and http://www.wildwomynwisdom.org/ was born. It was originally intended and has continued to evolve as a sacred space for women to gather, celebrate, commune and share women's wisdom on the full moon (or sometimes the Saturday night following because we are all getting old and/or have things to do during the week that make it hard to stay up late and function at our best the next day when we actually do it on the full moon). I live 3 hours away now and about once a year is what I seem to manage.

This is Bridget and she is the amazing woman that started it all. Can you imagine being a little boy and having her as your first teacher? So fabulous, gorgeous and amazing. Love her, got to hug on her and chat and it wasn't long enough but it was better than nothing!

So this evening, in addition to all the drumming and singing and dancing, we were treated to the poet, Sheridan Bushnell. I will admit that when I go, which used to be a lot more than now, I always got there late (like this time) because I really don't want to bundle up my feelings in a little blurb for public consumption and share. Sometimes that is what happens before the party gets started. It is not my thing. I am there for the whiskey or wine (depending on my mood), the chocolate, the very occassional roll your own cigarette and the drumming. Everyone who matters knows this so I think they were somewhat amused by how blown away I was by this 70 year old poet that I'd never heard of before. I have to thank Bridget up there for making me come inside because I was happy out in the cold with the party girls and I would have missed something quite extraordinary if I'd not been coaxed to come in and warm up by the fire.

So this is Sheridan.

And this is just one of her poems that she read in the tipi on Saturday night.

MUTE

Everyone speaks,
But no one listens.

As if we could hide the silence,
Anoint it in conversation,
Bottle it as holy water for the newly born,

To hide the pain of knowing
We are so much more.

Sheridan Bushnell

You can find a lot more about her here: http://www.untamedshow.com/index.htm

She is really, really cool! And I am not easily impressed. Here are some things she said which I loved hearing.

"It is okay to be happy." - kind of a duh sort of thing but it is always harder than I think to be really okay with it. I always think someone is going to pull the rug out from under me and that is not the best way to go through life.
"Be yourself. Everyone else is taken." (she actually saw this painted on the wall of a shop in the NC Mtns.) I love that and I'd never heard it before.
She was an inspiring speaker and storyteller. It was great fun.
Next morning I woke up to brunch with more friends. This lady drove all the way from Columbia, SC to have breakfast with me. She was coming anyway but she woke up before the crack of dawn so we could see eachother and I totally heart her!

cavorting in the garden

Had to run get new tires - yuck, watch more basketball - we lost this time but I got to hold a baby for almost the whole game and he was so happy and my eldest said, "Babies love you mom because you have mom hands. I have divided them into categories (sort of) but once again, GP takes the cake. I may not love her but she's got class.
Perfect.

Next in the classy dept was Emma Stone. Her dress was very highbrow and she looked wonderful. I think she is a terrific young actress as well. She has a wonderful, big personality. Win, win.

And though I have no idea who this is, she looks smashing! Love this dress.

I was actually shocked at how out of touch I am. Who are all these people?, I kept asking.

Winning in color and overall adorableness was Michele Williams.

I loved that Busy was her date but I didn't like or hate Busy's dress so she doesn't get on here.
Next was this - she looks fantastic.

In the total glitz dept.:

This was Hollywood glamour at it's best. Not too many people could pull this off but Milla owned it. Terrific.

Octavia looked beautiful. Great dress choice for her.

Pretty dress. Not a fan of her look. Eat a hamburger and fries on the way home sweetie.
There was a lot of white. These were the three most striking in my opinion other than the two up top in overall winners.

Next up are the folks that would look good in a paper sack. Nothing to write home about dress wise but the package never disappoints. I mean it is hard to be more attractive than a Penelope or an Angie. Loved Penelope's hairdo! She wins for that.

And Angie is just a stone cold fox and she knows it. Bad ass. Hello, Mrs. Pitt! You know everyone was drooling.

All the commentators were oooing and ahhing over the dress of George's flavor of the year but while she is a lovely young woman - the dress is just eh. It was pretty cliche just how trophy girlfriend she appeared given the occassion. Marchesa is not my cup of tea.

As evidenced also by Sandy's dress. Not a fan.

And if we give awards for looking like an Oscar, I pick Meryl over what's her name anyway just because I love her and she is actually famous for a real reason. Still, if this dress had just been taken in a little, I think it would have been stunning on her. It was kind of baggy and saggy and I know she doesn't give a damn.

As for Natalie, she looked like a highschool girl with good taste and really rich parents heading to the prom in millions of dollars worth of diamonds. Definite disconnect here. A headband with a satin bow would have gone better with this dress than that necklace and that is just to drive home the point that they do not go together at all. Really weird. She needs a new stylist stat. Hair up, lose that necklace for something a little more bohemian and longer and it might have worked. Maybe. I like the dress. It had potential. I think. Lovely woman. It pains me to criticize.

Winning in the best earring category:

But I love emeralds so I might be biased. I think it was especially inspiring for the younger set and she showed them all how it is done.
I liked her performance dress a lot.

Better than the one she showed up in but she was by far the best dressed female in both.

Unless you count GP.

I love this dress and the slicked back hair but girlfriend needs to eat a sandwich badly. This skinny is not even remotely sexy to me. Her in this dress and 10 more pounds - yowza. As is, it screams, all I do is work out and eat healthy stuff and work on my blog. Boring but the dress single handedly saved the day.

LL Cool J is a classy dude. My husband made fun of this ensemble but I thought he was looking mighty fine and he did a great job. I was never a big fan of WH's music but the woman, in her prime, could sing better than anyone else and I was always rooting for her to get it together. Some people burn bright and fast and she was one although it just never seemed to quite fit that she lost her way so fast and furious with that much God given and acknowledged talent and the package with which it was so neatly tied up.

She did have a smile, voice and spirit that could make you Believe.

And I will never forget her singing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. My husband came home from a woodworking meeting with a postcard about an art show in Myrtle Beach and his work jumped right out at me.

http://www.michaelbauermeister.com/Michael_Bauermeister/Michael_Bauermeister_Home.html

You should definitely check out his website if you like this because this is just a sample of his work.

xo

Location:Woodworking Part Deux
Coastal Detourhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08691350151351094235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2672997258938603955.post-5578267637017437072012-02-09T21:27:00.001-05:002012-02-09T21:27:39.944-05:00Women posing in chairs, Downton Abbey and other random stuffIf you were going to be all sexy and posy in a chair, what chair would you use? I highly recommend all of them.

I don't really know where to even start but I will say that any female over the age of 13 should be *REQUIRED to read Tina Fey's "Bossypants."
Really, I mean this. Go buy it, do not pass go.
Priceless AND essential. Go! Why are you still here!!??

I LOVE Tina Fey!

Of Particular Note -

A) "Poem from a Mother to It's Daughter" - no I am not going to copy it here, go buy the book. Remember *REQUIRED reading for 13 and up females. Even your teenage daughter will appreciate you after reading this - between texts and the overuse of "like" - for at least a couple of seconds and then she will promptly forget it until she has her own child. But if you die in the night she will run scrambling for it, keenly aware that behind all your mad ranting and raving and perceived craziness regarding her safety and well being you were a sheep in wolf's clothing and she was your little lamb. Mother Tiger is not an overrated use of your skills. Work it. Baa.

B) "A Celebrity's Guide to Celebrating the Birth of Jesus Christ" - hilarious, timely.

C) "That's Don Fey" - no doubt I loved this because I have an Alpha male father and I married one as well. Your teenage daughter should read this one too.

P.S. "Me Time" in the Chapter "There is a Drunk Midget in my Living Room" actually almost caused me to pee in my pants. In paperback very soon!

Next up was so sad I had to reread "Bossypants" twice to shake it off.

It is tragedy with equal portions devoted to dealing with the death of an only child and growing old beyond the point where one can reliably count on mind and body.
Joan is brilliant. I have read all of her books. "The Year of Magical Thinking" written after the death of her dear husband John was one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. This one was equally moving but such a harrowng account of this time in her life and all she has lost that it left me breathless. I cried a few times. I cry occassionally when I think about it now - what it means to be alone and what can happen when the natural order of things gets upside down. She is so honest about her delusions, failing memories and perceived short comings as a mother and yet it comes to us as though through a kaleidiscope of her equal forthrightness about the increasing, small failures of her physical and mental capacities brought on by age and the unspeakable losses she has endured in a very short span of time. These all fold in on eachother in a poetic, spinning narrative. It is heartbreaking. It haunts me. We all like to believe that we do the best we can with our children. I have long chosen to believe that if you really love them, are present in the deepest sense of the word, as honest as possible about yourself and pepper life with humor they will love you back and be there when needed despite any shortcomings or personal quirks you may possess that drive them crazy. God forbid they die first and leave you alone and frail and vulnerable beyond imagining. Not one for the faint of heart but an important book - this account of the death of Quintana Roo and Joan's own faltering health as she tries to make sense of her life - past, present and future - without her two most beloved.
This one left me exhausted and feeling fairly lucky to have such a boring life. She is a fascinating woman and there was so much I did not know. Both inspiring and cautionary. This particular version was written by Patricia Bosworth, her only female biographer and is quite thorough and intensely researched. "The Private Life of a Public Woman" is the perfect subtitle. Intimate and exhaustive and did I mention exhausting?
Jane, I love you but you make me very tired. A really fascinating read and a triumph of how to reinvent oneself over and over again. You will never believe it can't be done after this one. Oh to have a sliver of that energy and discipline - minus the larger than life demons thank you very much.
I did notice in reading these last two books that Vanessa Redgrave and Coco Chanel (or rather her clothes) kept popping up so I want to read about them both next. I guess I am on a powerful woman kick these days. It all seems very appropriate as I saunter towards midlife in continual pursuit of striking a balance among the roles I juggle day in and day out in the shadow of a double standard that may have dulled it's edge with time but still exists for women who have demanding careers, goals and a family. If anyone tries to tell you it gets easier, they are lying but all of the women featured here had a hand in paving the way.

This one is already downloaded on the Kindle and promises to be a stomach turner. I can't wait!
However, other than a subpar autobiography by Vanessa Redgrave written the year I was married, there does not seem to be a suitable or worthy account available yet of the brilliant actress, political activist and always controversial figure. What strikes me right now is that Vanessa was playing Joan on Broadway in "The Year of Magical Thinking" while Joan was mourning the loss of her daughter. While Joan was working on "Blue Nights," Vanessa lost her own daughter Natasha, tragically and unexpectedly.
It is not a bond to envy but a harsh reminder to hold your loved ones tight and try not to muck it up too much in the process.

If you just want to keep it on the lighter side, "Bossypants" really is basically everything you need to know about being a successful woman, wife and mother in the modern world and you will still cry -- but only from laughter.
God Bless Tina Fey. Amen.
It is a very little bathroom and during the course of fixing things up my very brilliant husband had this idea. What a genius! Love that guy. Behind said built in, there is some extra storage if we ever need it and all we have to do is take out the screws and the whole thing slides out. So much better than sheetrock and nowhere to put anything! Of course, we'll (he'll) have to move the towel rack but isn't it always the little things?. . .
It makes me think of Lori McKenna's fairly new album. I've been listening to it this week even though I downloaded it forever ago and forgot all about it. It came out in January! So typical. It is called "Lorraine" and one of the songs is called "The Most" and like so much of her song writing it resonates soundly because she has a house full of children (5) at vastly varying stages in that long, short stretch to adulthood. In this song she also writes about "pieces of paper that I'll get back to later, I'll write you a story how I ended up here" which pretty much sums up how I feel about my whole work life and our financial sustenence in one phrase(although it applies equally to the amount of paper that it takes to run a household and all that school stuff and church stuff that comes home week in and week out that you never finish wading through). She lives in a small town, married young and is still married, like me and that is what she writes about. Most of her songwriting makes me cry big happy (and sad) tears at the messiness of it all and the chaos out of which come those moments that absolutely slay and bring me to my knees for the beauty of it all. But it really IS the little things in the chaos that bring what matters into focus, and Lori gets that better than any songwriter I can think of. Not just on this song. I don't always love how she arranges things but her words are one of those little things for me like that new shelf in the bathroom and the way my husband looks at me every once in a while like he understands my high expectations (cue "I'm Not Crazy" on "Unglamorous" - also Lori McKenna, 2007).

(And don't even think about listening to the last track on "Lorraine" if you have lost someone central to your life unless you want to be a big puddle on the floor. It is the most beautifully arranged song on there in my opinion but I have not listened to it once without crying big, sloppy tears).
My life is a grocery store line
A "We'll be just fine"
Don't know how we survive, but we do

My life is an early spring snow
The last thread of hope
That I just keep hanging on to

My life is pieces of paper that I'll get back to later
I'll write you a story, how I ended up here
How the little things make us and how long it takes us
To figure out what matters the most. . . . .

My life is a two dollar beer
Friday nights here
With friends that I've known since high school

My life is an order to go
A rainy car ride back home
And someone you love to lay next to

My Life is pieces of paper that I'll get back to later
I'll write you a story, how I ended up here
How the little things make us and how long it takes us
To figure out what matters the most . . . . .

Someday well I'll look back and wonder
Someday comes around quicker than they told you
Asking "Did I do, what I was suppose to"
In my Life

Don't know Why the little things make us and sometimes it takes us
To damn long to figure what matters the most . . . .
My life is green grass through the snow
A sweet reckless hope
I was certainly confident that I knew what I was doing the day we tied the knot. I mean check me out - I am all "I got this." I was the 2nd of my closest friends to get married and 24 years old.

17 years, four towns, three houses, three children, three dogs, one cat, a rabbit, two guinea pigs, and a bunch of fish and gray hair (his not mine!) later. . .

And that just covers the time we've been married. Love this guy even though he sometimes makes me crazy and, no doubt, visa versa. I am no picnic even on my best days but somehow it mostly works and when it isn't working so well it is definitely either my fault or his depending on who you ask!
The main thing is that I would do it all over again.
Rejuvenative, cleansing and nourishing with a fantastic aroma.

In a base of Hazelnut and Rosehip Seed oil - recommended for daily use to reduce appearance of wrinkles, sun damage and scarring. Contains Helichrysum, Lavender, Sandalwood, Neroli, Carrot Seed, Rose Geranium, Roman Chamomile, Jasmine Grandiflorum, Palmarosa and Ylang Ylang #1. Rosehip seed itself has vitamin A compounds that act like natural 'Retin-A', without the side effects of excessive drying and photosensitivity.

This stuff is awesome. I get carded when I am with my 16 year old daughter or, if I am not drinking, they ask if we want one check or two. Makes her crazy but I am definitely not complaining.

Along with a little mineral foundation:

mascara (any kind), a little lip gloss (any kind) and sometimes a little eyeliner and shadow, I am good to go but not as particular about. If that changes, you'll be the next to know. The bare minerals are essential though. I love this makeup.

For cleaning I use Dr. Hauska cleansing creme. I have been using it for at least 10 years. Tried and true and essential. www.drhauska.com

For my hair, which is fine, curly (tending frizzy in this coastal climate 9 months out of the year) and colored religiously, this Morrocan Oil is hair manna from the gods. You can use it generously and you don't look like you've been attacked by a vat of whale blubber. My hair feels so silky and healthy. I never go anywhere without it. Ever. It would be a true bourgeois crisis if I left it behind. I would cry. It is excellent for all hair types or so days my hair dresser. It is that one hair product I have been waiting for all my life.

My slant tweezermans (www.tweezerman.com) - nothing else works on my Brooke Sheilds eyebrows. Also a life changing discovery back in the day.

And that is it. Those are the only 5 things that where I go, they go. Everything else is just gravy or easily bought at the corner drugstore.

Now to get over my anxiety about airport security confiscating them. I hate to check a bag for a weekend jaunt.

Have a good one!

XO
Coastal Detourhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08691350151351094235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2672997258938603955.post-8534301104312908882011-07-22T10:12:00.006-04:002011-07-22T10:15:32.699-04:00LobsterI love it. This is that lobster roll I told you about at Port of Call in Southport. To.Die.For. I want another one right now!

Then this week, Stylegirl, Jess James posted this adorable lobster print dress on Facebook.

And that made me think of this dress I was debating buying which has nothing to do with lobsters except it is the same color as the lobsters above.
This is how my brain works. I took a picture of myself in it to text to a friend because I was shopping alone.
I did not post it to Twitter. :-) I also did not buy it but Vitamin Sea, also in Southport (same owner as Sole Searching), is filled with lovely, lovely pretties.

The shoes I did buy and they are serious - from Sole Searching. I will pick the shoes over the dress every single time. What about you?
